Rose study (series of 28), 2018, 15.5" x 11. 5", Watercolour on Paper
This was part of a series of watercolour studies that I did during a residency in a small village in Japan. I was staying in a traditional farmhouse and outside of the shoji screens there was a rose bush to glean roses from. I made numerous rose studies, seventeen of which to give to each of the households in the village. These drawings were part of a bigger project that also consisted of lotus imagery. I chose the rose as an offering and symbol of my home in the West and my gratitude to the villagers.
